Since the beginning of time, the super rich and powerful have done whatever they can to find the fountain of youth. The magical water source was supposedly capable of reversing the aging process. The more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s no different today. In a never ending desire to remain beautiful and look younger, celebrities have gone under the plastic surgeon’s knife time after time. Celebrities getting plastic surgery is not new, it’s been the norm for decades. Botched surgeries appear to be more common now, but why?
Plastic surgery has been around since the late 1800s and the first documented breast augmentation surgery was performed in 1895. Now, there are more than 1 million cosmetic procedures each year performed in the U.S. alone. Why are there so many botched surgeries in celebrity circles?
Plastic surgeons Terry Dubro and Paul Nassif spoke to Cosmopolitan.com about the jaw-dropping number of surgeries gone bad. They say the number of unrepairable surgeries is shocking. The duo says it’s astonishing how many times nothing can help repair the damage that has been done. During the interview, Dr. Dubro and Dr. Nassif made the point that cosmetic procedures are “as serious as brain surgery”. They say it’s one of the main reasons why there are so many botched celebrity surgeries today. Check out 15 celebrities with horrific results making us wonder why they do it.
15. Donatella Versace
Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace began changing her appearance back when she was a teenager, dyeing her hair platinum blonde and using lots of dark eyeliner. Today, Versace has changed her appearance even more after going through a number of surgeries since the 1990s. The 60-year-old designer creates new looks as a business and transformed herself a bit too much. The most noticeable changes have been to her nose and lips. Her overly plump upper lip looks totally out of proportion and has landed her on the top plastic surgery faux list. It’s never been reported that Versace is unhappy with any of the changes.
14. Rene Zellweger
When fans saw Rene Zellweger step onto the red carpet at a Hollywood gala, they didn’t even recognize who she was. There was such a dramatic change that CNN and the New York Times both did a story on the Houston native. Some surgeons who didn’t do the surgery speculated that Zellweger likely had upper lid surgery on her eyes and rhinoplasty to narrow the bridge of her nose. Others speculated she also had fat removed from her cheeks and Botox injected into her jaw muscles to make them thinner. Fans who remember Zellweger before the procedure think she lost the looks that made her interesting and special. A report from the Boston Herald reported her friends say she’s obsessed with staying younger and is having a hard time accepting she's not the hot young thing in Hollywood anymore.
13. Lil' Kim
Rapper Lil' Kim looked a lot different when she made an appearance at the Hot 97 Summer Jamz concert. It wasn’t just the black leather bodysuit with gold chains, it was the different facial features. The plastic surgery drastically changed her appearance and fans didn’t like it. She was criticized heavily for the new look and Lil' Kim at first called it pure speculation and her agent blasted the speculation as "fictitious, malicious, and despicable." The famous rapper has denied having cosmetic surgery but her face appeared to be distorted in her before and after plastic surgery photos. Her skin even appeared to be lighter. It doesn’t look like she got the look she was after.

Barry Manilow who is noted as one of the best selling artist of all time, wasn’t satisfied with his appearance after 71 years. Now the plastic surgery he received is making him famous in a different way. Manilow admitted to having small plastic surgeries dating back to the 90's but most people didn’t seem to notice. Now after more surgeries, the singer is looking worse not better. It’s been reported that Manilow has had eyelid surgery, brow lift, facelift procedure, Botox injections and forehead lift. While he wanted a fresher and younger appearance, he now looks numb and rather frozen.

We know Daryl Hannah from Roxanne, Blade Runner, Steel Magnolias, Splash, and Kill Bill. After her plastic surgery, many think she lost her natural beauty, and ruined her looks completely. People were shocked when they saw the transformation she made. The actress was known before as being beautiful, sexy and confident. After the procedure of lip augmentation, cheek implants, Botox injections and face lifting, she now looks completely unnatural and plastic. Most think the procedures to Hannah turned out to be disastrous.
10. Jocelyn Wildenstein
NYC socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein has to be the poster child for plastic surgeries gone bad. In Jocelyn's case it’s gone from bad to worse. Why didn’t someone tell her to stop while she was ahead? Too much of a good thing never is. She’s been nicknamed “Catwoman” due to the extensive surgeries that resemble the animal. It’s been reported Wildenstein has spent $4 million on her face over the years. During a trip to Africa and meeting her husband there, she fell in love with the local big cats. In a strange twist to win her husband back after a divorce, she went to the surgeon with an odd request. She wanted to look like a big cat because her ex also loved them. It didn’t really work out the way she wanted it to.
9. Joan Rivers
Joan Rivers will always be remembered for her hilarious and often crass commentaries. She is also well known for her many plastic surgeries. Her daughter said her mother's surgical enhancements were a source of conflict between them. The comic even wrote a book called "Men Are Stupid ... And They Like Big Boobs – A Woman's Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery." It was in the book where she admitted to having more than a dozen cosmetic surgeries.
Rivers joked often about her daughter's concerns, but always said “it's part of being in show business.” She didn't think there was any such thing as too much. "If you had a dollar for every stitch in the face of someone you interviewed, you wouldn't be here," she told reporters.
8. Mickey Rourke
The actor underwent surgery in attempt to regain his once-handsome looks. Mickey Rourke need the plastic surgery to correct the issues when he was a professional boxer in 1991. His acting career fizzled and he turned to boxing to pay the bills. Rourke returned to acting after he was advised to stop boxing due to neurological problems. According to experts, Rourke has undergone a facelift and upper eyelid lift, as well as hair transplants. Doctors say a badly done facelift can cost a man his sideburns. This appears to be the case with Rourke. The actor told Huffington Post, “Most of the surgery was to mend the mess of my face because of the boxing, but I went to the wrong guy to put my face back together.”
7. Dolly Parton
The country megastar underwent a complete facelift to prepare for her 50th wedding anniversary last year. Dolly Parton wanted to feel young for herself and look younger for her husband, Carl Dean. Not many stars stay married for 50 years so this was big deal for sure. This was not Parton’s first rodeo and she’s been nipped, tucked an incredible number of times over the years and not afraid to talk about it. Parton has talked openly in the past about her plastic surgeon; Dr. John Grossman, joking that he "does all fender work.” She was afraid she was beginning to look worn and haggard according to an insider and wanted to be ready for the big anniversary celebration.

She is known as The Duchess of Alba and her full name is María del Rosario Cayetana Paloma Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Fernanda Teresa. She’s otherwise known as Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart and has one of the most famous disfigured faces because of the many plastic surgeries. She’s been rumored to have gone under the knife several times over her 87 years on this Earth. There aren’t any official reports, but it’s obvious she either had one or numerous procedures that did not go well. From older photos of the Duchess of Alba, she was a beautiful woman and never should have had plastic surgery. True to her royalty, she never disclosed the extent of her surgeries.

Scott Thompson aka Carrot Top is famous for his comedy routines and self-deprecating humor. His stage name of course comes from his bright red hair which can’t be missed. The comedian has changed his looks in a drastic way and is becoming more famous for his freakish new looks. His face has been heavily altered and so has his body, fueling speculation that he may be using steroids to pump up his muscles. Many have said he is the victim of plastic surgeries gone bad. Carrot Top may have received Botox injections, brow lift surgery, and even laser resurfacing treatment. In an interview with entertainment reporter Alicia Jacobs, he simply joked about it when asked if he had plastic surgery.

Courtney Love is known for being a great musician who can play the guitar, the keyboard, and the bass and has impressive vocal skills. Yet she is better known for her marriage to Nirvana lead singer, Kurt Cobain. Love admitted she had nose surgery when she was in her 20's. Love went off the deep end after Cobain’s death in 1994 and her drug usage and wild living was well documented. It was around this time that she began to undergo more plastic surgeries changing her appearance on an annual basis. Love admits to having a few procedures so she could make it in Hollywood.
3. Janice Dickenson
America's self-proclaimed "first supermodel," Janice Dickinson wanted to keep her beautiful looks and has admitted she went under the knife for a breast enlargement, tummy tuck, both neck and face-lifts, liposuction, and Botox. She was 33 when she had the first procedure. In an interview with ABC News, Dickinson talked about the plastic surgeries she's had in the past decades. She said, "Brow lift, yes, I've had my brow lifted. I was getting a little bit of a sag coming down my face, so they lifted it up. Yes, I've had collagen put in. Injections. It's for the fine lines on the face.” When her son Nathan asked his mother to stop, Dickinson told UK's Daily Mail in response, "I won't do any more plastic surgery, if he's looking."

We wonder why a beautiful actress like Pamela Anderson, known for her role in Baywatch, would want to change her appearance. She’s had a number of plastic surgeries that have caused her fans to scratch their heads. She’s received breast implants, a lip job and nose job. Amanda Lepore had a sex change operation at the age of 19. She’s 47 now. It’s hard to imagine the pain and extreme surgical procedures it took for her to undergo the transformation. It took three breast augmentation plastic surgeries, buttock implants and she even had her bottom ribs broken so she could have a smaller waist. In addition to all those extreme procedures, she had lip injections, fillers, Botox, a nose job, a forehead lift and her hairline lowered.
