Known for his philanthropic works, Nicolas Berggruen is an American-German investor and businessman with an estimated net worth of $2 billion as of March 2013, according to Forbes. He is known to be the President and founder of Berggruen Holdings and Nicolas Berggruen Institute.

Of Jewish, Albanian, Austrian, and German ancestry, Nicolas Berggruen was born to an actress and an art collector. After graduating from New York University with a degree in Finance and International Business, he started working at Bass Brothers Enterprises investment company, in its real estate division.

While in New York, he started accumulating wealth with his $250,000 worth of trust fund. He began with buying real estates. Eventually, he moved to venture funds, hedge funds, bonds, stocks and portfolio of private equities. It was in 1984 when he founded the Berggruen Holdings, Inc.. In 1988, he co-founded Alpha Investment Management with Julio Mario Santo Domingo, Jr.. However, the hedge fund was sold to Safra Bank 16 years later.
